Friday March 24:
Triangle Shirtwaist Fire commemoration to feature GSOC
At noon on
Friday, GSOC members will join union members from across the city at Washington
and Greene Streets, on NYU's campus, for the annual Triangle Shirtwaist Fire
commemoration. Each year, UNITE HERE joins with the New York City Fire
Department to commemorate the 146 immigrant garment workers-mostly young
women-who died in a tragic fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in 1911 (the
building is now NYU's Brown Building.) This tragedy galvanized the city to fight
for labor reforms in the workplace, and remains one of the most important events
in U.S. labor history.
This year marks the 95th Anniversary of the fire,
and an hour-long event has been planned at the site. Speakers will include Mayor
Michael Bloomberg, a UNITE HERE hotel worker, a GSOC striker, and students from
schools across the city.
We encourage attendance at this event, both to
come together as a union, and also to join with our labor allies throughout the
city.
